600,000 MEALS TO NEPAL: OUTREACH, INC UNITES WITH INTERNATIONAL KIWANIS, ROTARY, AND LIONS CLUBS

Outreach, Inc. will ship nearly 600,000 meals to aid the victims of the Nepal earthquake that killed over 8,000 people on April 25, 2015 and left millions of survivors in need of aid.  The containers will load at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, May 20 and Thursday, May 21from the Outreach, Inc. warehouse at 7401 S Hwy 69, Des Moines, Iowa.

Outreach founder Floyd Hammer said, “The motto of Outreach is Together, We Make a Difference, and, once again, the power of collaboration is demonstrated as together we send food aid to Nepal. Three of the world’s largest service organizations, Kiwanis, Rotary, and Lions International, joined with Outreach to provide help to victims of the earthquake. These meals will be delivered by Rotarians in Nepal.”

Deepak Giri of Rotary Club of West Liberty, Iowa said, “We have many family members in Nepal with whom we talk every other day. However, after the earthquake, we couldn’t reach them for several days. Thankfully, they are okay but there is no food and the people are very hungry.  My wife and I have brothers who are Rotarians in Nepal and it’s great to know Rotary Clubs here can help Rotary Clubs in our home country.”

Ken Bradley, Executive Director of Colorado Feeding Kids, a meal-packaging organization started by the Denver Kiwanis Club said, “Colorado Feeding Kids partners with Outreach to feed hungry people in Colorado and around the world. We are also partnering with the Nepal Children’s Organization, Rotary Nepal, Nepal Red Cross Society-Chitwan Chapter, Lions Club of Bharatpur Chautari and Members of the Rocky Mountain District of Kiwanis International to provide F.E.W. Basics (Food, off-grid Electricity and Water solutions) to the affected areas of Kathmandu and Gulmi.”

John Ockenfels, Rotary District 6000 Governor said, “Rotary International is a worldwide service organization with 1.2 million members who believe in the motto of ‘Service Above Self.’ One of the greatest strengths of Rotary International is our willingness and ability to assist people in need in our own communities and throughout the world. By working through local Rotary Districts and Clubs, we can ensure that the help gets to those who need it as quickly and efficiently as we can. District 6000 is proud to be part of this team of service organizations like Outreach and Kiwanis: people doing what we can to help the people of Nepal.”

Walt Githens, long time member of the Rotary Club of Des Moines and currently a member of the International Service Committee, said, “There is no doubt that the country of Nepal is in trouble after the recent earthquake, so when we got the message that Nepal and our home District 6000 in Iowa were going to work together, our club wanted to help.  The fact that Floyd Hammer, an active Rotary Club of Des Moines member, and co-founder of Outreach, Inc., was providing the food packets made it even more important for us to be involved. Bottom line, it makes me proud to be part of efforts to help people who are really hurting. We can do that through Rotary International, and this project to assist in feeding Nepalese earthquake victims is a prime example of the kinds of things we get to do that really makes my heart warm and brings home the Rotary motto of ‘Service Above Self’.”​

Ralph Pantoga, Public Relations Director of the West Des Moines Lions Club said, “The West Des Moines Lions Club has a long history in providing help for people in need both here in the U.S. and internationally.  It fits right into our mission to partner with Outreach in sending these meals to the people of Nepal where many Lion Club members are all ready on the ground helping to provide aid.”
