Des Moines Diocese Parishes Package Food for Kilimanjaro Mission of Hope

Sacred Heart Church of Oelwein Joins the Story as Des Moines Diocese Parishes Package Food for Kilimanjaro Mission of Hope in Moshi, Tanzania!

Outreach Program - Oelwein-photo-1This story began when Monsignor Frank Bognanno traveled 8,400 miles from Des Moines, Iowa, to climb 19,341 feet up Mount Kilimanjaro. Msgr Bognanno, a cancer survivor, traveled with Dr. Dan Deming’s Above and Beyond Cancer team. While staying nearby in Moshi, he met Bishop Isaac Amami and saw the great work that Kilimanjaro Mission of Hope (KMOH) is doing, especially for nearly 300 disabled children in their school. Several churches in the Des Moines Diocese are packaging 100,000 nutritious Outreach meals that will soon be shipped to Moshi.

On March 29, over 260 volunteers from the Sacred Heart Church of Oelwein, Iowa, packaged 26,352 Rice and Bean meals for the KMOH. The church also packaged 6,048 Outreach Mac & Cheese meals for local needs for a total of 32,400 meals for the hungry at home and abroad.

Joane Amick, Coordinator for Social Justice Committee of Sacred Heart Parish said, “Our goal was to help feed the hungry. At the same time it was also a wonderful community builder for our parish. It was great to see all ages, kindergarteners through senior citizens, working together and having fun at the same time. Through the generosity of many people’s donations of time and money, we were able to package 32,400 meals in 2 hours.”

Leon Sporrer, Outreach, Inc. Event Coordinator said, “I’ve helped several of the churches in the Des Moines Diocese package meals for Kilimanjaro and there is a special kind of enthusiasm with them that is unique. They know they are all a part of something much larger than themselves. They are fulfilling our motto,Together, we make a difference!”
