In August 2014, Outreach launched the Hunger-Free Iowa Initiative, a movement to end hunger in Iowa’s 99 counties. AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) members will plan and conduct Hunger Dialogues in each county to highlight issues relevant to each county and/or community’s level of food insecurity, assess the forms of relief in place, and identify opportunities to create and implement collaborative projects. VISTA members’ efforts will increase the county’s collective impact through three Hunger-Free Iowa Initiative events: a county-wide hunger dialogue, county-wide resource packaging event, and establishing a hunger-free Iowa county leadership team. AmeriCorps VISTA member duties include (but not limited to):
- Make presentations to community stakeholders about Outreach, Inc.’s Hunger- Free Iowa Initiative
- Hunger-related research
- Facilitate Hunger Dialogues
- Increase number of organizations that benefit from Outreach meals
- Create connections with corporations, civic groups, churches and schools
- Create messaging for newsletters
- Update social media streams
- Database management
- Other duties as assigned

Program Eligibility:
-Must be at least 18
-Must be a U.S. citizen
Program Benefits:
-Upon completion of service you will receive a $5,730 education award or $1,500 cash stipend
-Modest Living Allowance paid bi-weekly
-Relocation assistance (if qualified)

-Childcare assistance (if eligible)
-Members may have outside lawful part-time employment that does not interfere with the VISTA service or service hours (must be approved by supervisor)
Program Requirements:
-Members must commit to 1 year of full-time service (August 1, 2015 – July 31, 2016)
-Members are responsible for their own housing
-Must have drivers license and reliable transportation (public transportation not an option, members will be asked to drive to Iowa communities outside of Des Moines)
-Members must be able to attend a pre-service orientation scheduled for July 28th– 31st in Minneapolis, MN. (Travel arrangements will be taken care of.)
This is a national service program position, not a paid employment. The gross annual subsistence allowance is $11,676 for yearlong members (dispersed bi-weekly and is non-negotiable). At the end of service VISTA members must choose either the $5,730 Education Award or the alternative, the end-of-service cash stipend of $1,500.
