United Way of Erie County’s 1st Centennial Meal Pack-a-Thon a Great Success!

More than 340 volunteers from Erie County, PA, arrived at the Zem Zem Shrine Club in Erie on April 22 and packOutreach Program - United Way Meal Packaging Eventaged 100,000 meals for the hungry!Outreach Event Coordinator Bryan Coffey said, “The surrounding communities in the Erie, PA area are going to benefit greatly from this project. This afternoon they packaged 100,000 meals as part of their United Way’s Centennial programs! The energy at this event was very high! Way to go United Way of Erie County!”Volunteers packaged 50,000 of the Outreach Mac & Cheese meal and 50,000 of the Outreach Rice and Bean Meal. Staff from Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania  picked up the product and will distribute it to various agencies in the region that they serve.

The Pack-a-Thon is the largest event of its kind for the surrounding area and was a focal point of the Erie County’s week-long United Way Days of Caring. United Way is extensively involved in eliminating hunger and poverty in the region.

Outreach Program - United Way -2An extensive study done by Feeding America found startling results for the area served by Second Harvest.  Nearly one-third of  Erie County finds help in various meal programs administered by the Food Bank.
