Holy Rosary Church in Glenwood, IA Packages Meals for Kilimanjaro Mission of Hope and Outreach in Tanzania

Over 120 volunteers gathered at Holy Rosary Church in Glenwood, Iowa, on February 25, 2015, to package 30,000 Outreach Rice and Bean meals. Those meals are part of a larger shipment of meals that are being packaged throughout the Catholic Diocese of Des Moines to support their work in the Kilimanjaro Mission of Hope and Outreach in Moshi, Tanzania. Several churches in the Diocese are packaging various amounts of meals in their own churches as a way to engage their members in a practical way to help feed the hungry nearly half-the-world away.

Father Dan Siepker of Holy Rosary Church said, “I did these meal-packaging events with Outreach when I served the parish in Atlantic, Iowa. It had such great impact on our church and our community, I knew I had to bring it here.  The youth love it and did more than we expected for the first time around!”

Outreach Event Coordinator Leon Sporrer said, “It’s always a pleasure to package meals with churches like Holy Rosary who know where their meals are going and how much the people on the other end need them.  There was a lot of energy in the volunteers and they made short order of packaging all of those meals. Many of them might never be able to go to Moshi and help feed the hungry, but they have made a powerful contribution here in Glenwood by preparing the meals that will be delivered.”

Sporrer continued, “Unique to this event was that Father Dan actually challenged the youth with a dollar-to-dollar match. For each dollar they raised, he matched their dollar personally.  That just shows you the commitment of a leader who wants to engage his people.”
