The Outreach Program Celebrates Passing of Global Food Security Act!

Relief is one step closer for some of the one billion people across the world who suffer from food insecurity. On September 28, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass the Global Food Security Reauthorization Act of 2018 (S. 2269), a measure that passed in the Senate by voice vote in June, 2018. If signed by President Trump, this relief act will allocate more than $2 billion annually for five years to combat hunger and increase agricultural growth in developing countries.
The Global Food Security Act (GFSA) was originally passed in 2016 to implement a comprehensive strategy to combat malnutrition and hunger. The GFSA focuses on improving maternal and infant nutrition; increasing sustainable and equitable agricultural development; and funds the United States Agency for International Development. With an estimated world population of nine billion by 2050, the need for agricultural production to increase by 75 percent in the next 32 years is vital. The GFSA plays a significant role in providing the solutions to feeding the world’s ever-increasing population.
Outreach Program Founders Floyd Hammer and Kathy Hamilton traveled to Washington D.C., in late September to meet with Iowa Senators Charles Grassley and Joni Ernst regarding this vital legislation. Outreach was one of the first organizations to sign on as supporters of the GFSA and have consistently advocated for its passage. They joined with other members of The Alliance to End Hunger in DC in this bi-partisan effort.
“We support this legislation because it exactly aligns with the goals of Outreach – getting healthy food to hungry people throughout the world,” Hammer said.
