In recognition of 9/11  as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, the Outreach Program facilitated meal-packaging events for 911Day.orgin New York City, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco.  A gathering of more than 8,000 volunteers from across the country honored the lives lost in the 2001 tragedies by fighting the present-day tragedy of food insecurity in those cities.

“The 9/11 Day organization has taken a date known for a horrible tragedy and turned it into a day of service,” Outreach Program Co-Founder and President Floyd Hammer said. “We are honored to be a part of these events and are beyond pleased with the impact these meals will have on feeding the hungry throughout the U.S.”

In order to faciliate a national mulit-city event on the same day, Outreach sent their TOP (The Outreach Program) Team Leaders to provide the oversight of the events and volunteers. TOP Leaders, also known as The Sunshine Brigade because of their bright, marigold-colored shirts and helpful smiles, helped volunteers to package more than 1.6 million apple-cinnamon oatmeal meals for distribution to food pantries in those same cities. In addition, 85,000 meals were sent from the New York City event to victims of Hurricane Florence. It was the first of many hunger-fighting efforts by the TOP Leadership Program, Outreach Program’s newest volunteer program.

“We look forward to welcoming TOP Team Leaders to help us package more meals and fight food insecurity,” Outreach Program Co-Founder and Board Secretary Kathy Hamilton said. “The hardwork of these volunteers was instrumental to our success with 9/11 Day and I am excited to see what great things they will help Outreach accomplish in the future.”
